The electorates in the Kumawu constituency will be going to the polls on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, to elect a new Member of Parliament for the constituency to replace the late Philip Basoah.
Philip Basoah was the MP for Kumawu on the ticket of the NPP until his demise on March 27, 2023, in the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital following a short illness. He was laid to rest on Saturday, May 20, 2023.
The Kumawu seat in parliament has been vacant since he passed away; however, this is about to change as everything is set for the by-election which will be held tomorrow in the constituency to elect a replacement for the late MP.
This article features the names, profiles, and political parties of the four candidates eyeing the Kumawu parliamentary seat.
The first candidate on the ballot paper is Ernest Yaw Anim of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He is representing the party after he managed to secure 195 votes in the primaries.
He has promised to retain the Kumawu seat for the party by restoring unity among party members in the constituency. According to him, through his victory, he will bridge the gap between the party and the grassroots in Kumawu.
He stands a high chance of winning the up-coming by-election, as the Kumawu seat is customarily an NPP seat.

Akwasi Amankwaa has been able to secure the second position on the ballot paper. He is also vying for the Kumawu parliamentary seat on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Akwasi Amankwaa is the brother of Dr. Kwabena Duffuor.

Third on the ballot paper is an independent candidate by the name of Kwaku Duah. He contested with the late Philip Basoah in the 2020 parliamentary elections, but he has chosen to run as an independent candidate.
He was defeated in the 2020 elections by Philip Basoah, who garnered 14,960 valid votes, representing 51.1%.

Interestingly, the fourth person vying for the Kumawu seat is another independent candidate, Kwaku Duah.
He was not well known in the political terrain until he announced his intention to contest for the Kumawu parliamentary seat.
