Brazilian professional footballer Edson Arantes do Nascimento, popularly known as Pele has been honored in a grand style.
The legend’s nickname Pele, has been added to Portuguese dictionary as an someone out of the ordinary.
This comes after a campaign by his fans to acknowledge the legacy of the late player. The campaign titled ‘Pele in the dictionary’ which was led by the Pele Foundation and the Sportv garnered over 125,00 signatures to honor the legend’s impact in football.
His name was added to a Portuguese dictionary on Wednesday at the Summit Sports events in Pacaembu which was monitored by 1Family Radio.
According to the Michaelis dictionary, ‘Pele’ denotes “what or who is out of the ordinary, what o who by virtue of their quality, value or superiority cannot be equaled to anything or anyone, just like Pele, nickname of Edson Arantes do Nascimento (1940-2022), considered to be the greatest athlete of all time; exceptional, incomparable, unique.
“Examples: He is the Pele of basketball, she is the Pele of tennis, she is the Pele of Brazilian dramaturgy.’’
The Michaelis dictionary has already added the definition to their digital edition but they are yet to include it in their printed version.
