The office of the President of Ghana has demanded for a retraction and apology from Al Jazeera Media for a documentary they aired about the president.
This letter was issued and signed by Nana Bediatuo Asante, the Secretary to the President of Ghana on the 25th of April, 2023.
According to the letter which was sighted by 1Family Radio, the documentary aired by Al Jazeera was nothing but an inaccurate, unfair and a baseless accusation against President Akuffo-Addo.
“I am instructed by the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, to demand formally that Al Jazeera Media Network (Al Jazeera) retract immediately and apologize for airing an inaccurate and unfair documentary that contained spurious and unsubstantiated allegations against the President of Ghana,’’ the letter wrote.
Some portions of the letter noted that the allegation that the president was once the lawyer and a friend to Mr. Alistair and he also benefited unlawfully from an alleged $100m state infrastructure contract purportedly awarded to Mr. Mattias is baseless.
In the letter, Al Jazeera was requested in a letter by the Mr. Kow Essuaman, the Legal Counsel to the president on the 11th of April to provide information on the period for which the president allegedly provided legal representation to Mr. Mathias and his company. The network was also requested to provide details of the $100m tender for state infrastructure which was allegedly given to Mr. Mathias.
Mr. Bediatuo continued that the documentary was a malicious, defamatory and a calculated attempt to tarnish the reputation of the President and the Government of Ghana.
“It is therefore demanded that Al Jazeera withdraws the documentary immediately, retracts and apologizes to the President and the Government of Ghana for airing such unprofessional and defamatory documentary.’’
“It is imperative that you act forthwith on this request within seven days from the date of receipt of this letter,’’ the statement said.
