Former Ghanaian professional footballer, Prince Tagoe has opened up on why he thinks ex Black Stars midfielder, Michael Essien is no longer interested in the Black Stars of Ghana.
Michael Essien when asked by Nigerian journalist Lolade Adewuyi if he would like to coach the Black Stars of Ghana one day, he replied that he is not interested.
Some section of Ghanaians wondered why he would give such response considering the fact that he was once a player of the Black Stars.
Explaining why he thinks the former player is not interested in becoming the manager of the team, Prince Tagoe stated that Essien is bitter about the unfair treatment meted out to him by Ghanaians some years ago.
Speaking in an interview on Angel FM monitored by 1Family Radio, Prince Tagoe narrated what actually caused Essien’s resentment towards the Black Stars.
“I think this is a bit sensitive but Personally, I think Ghanaians didn’t treat him well. Honestly speaking, some of us can boldly say that Ghanaians did not treat him well. Essien was still helping and playing for Ghana during the time he was in Chelsea,’’ he noted.
He continued that Ghanaians didn’t really appreciate him because when he suffered an injury and was replaced by Anthony Annan, Ghanaian started rubbishing him.
“When Essien started getting injuries and was replaced by Anthony Annan, some fans started saying that he is not really worthy and he can choose to play for the Black Stars or not.’’
According to him, if Essien has decided not to have anything to do with the senior national team, his decision is justified.
Prince furthered that sometimes the attitude of some Ghanaians makes it difficult for good people like Essien to help the country.
“From the time we hosted AFCON and played at the World Cup in Brazil, it very obvious that Essien does not really come to the country because of the behavior of some Ghanaians.”
“The guy has really sacrificed for the country and if today he is in a good position to help the country, why wouldn’t he help the youth or the national team? I vehemently believe that it is our behavior and if don’t change, all the good people will withdraw from the senior national team,’’ Prince added.
