A Kenyan national has been arrested by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) for attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country through the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
The thirty-five-year-old woman who was identified as Njeri Mary was apprehended at KIA on the 15th of April, 2023 during the routine checks at the arrival hall.
In a statement issued by the Narcotics Control Commission on Monday, April 17, 2023, Mary arrived at the airport from a South African Airways Flight from the Nairobi via Johannesburg.
The statement which was sighted by 1Family Radio indicated, “the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) arrested a Kenyan national last Saturday, April 15, 2023 at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for smuggling 11.04 kilograms of cocaine which is worth US$309, 120.’’
According to the press release, the drugs were concealed in some packages of Cremora Food which Mary admitted were part of her luggage.
“A search of her luggage unveiled that packages of Cremora Food contained the concealed drugs. Initial questioning disclosed that the suspect had confirmed possession of the consignment in her luggage, and she was later arrested for further inquiry.’’
The commission continued that the products have been sent to the Ghana Standard Authority (GSA) for examination and report while Mary is currently in the custody of the police.
The statement assured the general public of the commitment of NACOC in the fight against illegal drug trafficking.
The commission however stressed that the possession and trafficking of illegal drugs without lawful authority is punishable by law.
