Women of African descent are more at risk of getting fibroids than anybody else, Dr. Dorothea Anim, a diagnostic radiologist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has disclosed.
According to her, the fibroid disease mostly affects women with black skin unlike the Caucasians.
Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime monitored by 1Family Radio, Dr. Anim emphasized on the need to create awareness of the disease in Africa to sensitize women on the symptoms of fibroids.
She furthered that women are vulnerable to the disease right from their reproductive and menstrual ages. Adding that 70% of women develop fibroids in a lifetime.
Dr. Anim stated that research has shown that women of African lineage are mostly at risk of developing fibroids than the caucasians.
“African women are at a higher risk of developing fibroids. Eight out of ten people globally of African origin have fibroids. The fibroid disease is very peculiar to black skin,’’ she disclosed.
She therefore urged women to be wary of the symptoms of fibroids and also seek early medical care when they notice these signs.
Frequent urination, back, leg and abdominal pains, heavy periods and bloating are some symptoms of fibroids she pinpointed.
