Kofi Iddie Adams, the Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency in the Oti region has criticized the appointments of new Electoral commissioners by the president.
President Akuffo-Addo on Monday, March 20, 2023 sworn in three new Electoral Commissioners. The three included Salima Ahmed Tijani, Rev. Akua Ofori Boateng and Dr. Peter Appiahene.
It is speculated that Dr. Peter Appiahene is an NPP patron at the University of Energy and Natural Resources.
The Buem lawmaker is of the opinion that the president has destroyed the sanctity of the Electoral Commission.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews monitored by 1Family Radio, Mr. Adams noted that Akuffo has diminished the office of the EC by appointing party faithful to the office.
According to the lawmaker, all the previous presidents of this country worked hard to protect the sanctity of the EC but this incumbent president has tainted the EC through politics.
He stated, ‘’all the previous presidents worked hard to protect the sanctity of the EC, but President Akuffo-Addo has adulterated the Electoral Commission through a partisan lens. This begun from the elimination of Charlotte Osei and her leadership through to the appointment of Jean Mensa and the appointment of the three new members.”
Kofi Adams believes that has disrespected and destroyed the independence of the EC by crowding the institution with party apparatchiks.
“The president and his government are not complacent with the number of party faithful at the presidency and they have disrespected the Electoral Commission by flooding the institution with their party members,’’ he added.
