Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Deputy Minority leader in Parliament has asserted that the directives by Fiifi Kwetey to the minority caucus to reject the approval of the minister-designate is insolent.
On Sunday February,19, 2023, the NDC in a statement release cautioned the minority caucus in parliament not to approve any of the new ministers appointed by the president. This statement was signed by Fiifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the party.
Speaking in an interview, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has indicated that this directive by Fiifi is an insult to the minority caucus in parliament. According to him, the statement by the General Secretary simply means that the minority assembly in parliament is unable to think.
He stated that the approval or rejection of a minister is strictly constitutional. Alexander added that as members of the appointment committee, they have to vet the nominees based on the constitution and not party interest.
“Fiifi Kwetey cannot sit in his party office and pass a statement to direct the lawmakers to reject nominees of the president,’’ he stressed. Alexander furthered that this directive by the General Secretary is a sign of insolence to the speaker and parliament as a whole.
According to him, what the NDC party just proved to Ghanaians that they have respect for the constitution of the land and also the new minority caucus do not have the ability to think.
Alexander added that they should be wary of everything they do because history is observing them.
