The former Minister for Trade and Industry for the National Democratic Congress, Ekow Spio-Garbrah has lambasted some MPs in Tamale and supporters of the party for being self-centered.
Speaking in an interview on Sompa FM, monitored by 1Family Radio, Mr. Garbrah stated that he is not pleased with the reaction of some MPs over the dismissal of Haruna Iddrisu as the Minority leader.
Spio Garbrah believes that the reaction of these MPs and supporters is incited by the fallacy that they are entitled to certain privileges when a native of their region is in power.
He stated that decisions that will be in the good interest of the party cannot be forfeited just to make the MPs in Tamale happy. He noted the decisions taken by the party must be in the interest of the whole party and not the interest of a few chosen people.
The former minister compared changes made in the leadership of the minority caucus in parliament to that of Asamoah Gyan, the former captain of the Black Stars. Regardless of his competence, skills and the number of years he has served the team and the country, Asamoah Gyan was still dismissed from the team.
He added that Haruna Iddrisu was always going to be replaced because he can’t be the minority leader forever. Spio Gabrah mentioned that the MPs from the north are adequately represented in parliament. Also, for the past ten years the flagbearer of the party is a northerner yet the MPs from the Volta and Ashanti regions have not protested against it.
Spio Gabrah noted that the fact that you have been removed from a position does not mean someone is against you. He announced that loosing one person won’t change anything and sometimes certain changes must be made to help the party to progress.
