James Kwasi Appiah, the former coach of the Black Stars has asserted that he made the right decision by replacing Asamoah Gyan as the captain of the team before the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
Andre Dede Ayew was made captain of the Black Stars team a month before the commencement of the 2019 AFCON by the former coach, Kwasi Appiah. This substitution was made while Asamoah Gyan was still part of the team and this led to Asamoah Gyan’s decision to retire from the team.
Speaking in an interview on Joy News, which was monitored by 1family Radio, the former coach stated that after seven years of making Asamoah Gyan the captain of the team, he thought there is a need for change and that is why he had him replaced by Andre Dede Ayew.
He furthered that, he made Gyan the captain in 2013 before the AFCON in South Africa. In 2019 he felt that Asamoah Gyan has served the team and the country enough. Therefore, he asked Asamoah to join him in managing the team but he refused.
Kwasi Appiah noted that he made Andre Ayew the captain because he was the assistance captain and has been with the team for a long time. He asserted that he made Andre Ayew the captain based on the fact that he wanted results from the 2019 AFCON tournament and not because he had something against Asamoah Gyan.
He mentioned that he made that decision with a good motive and not favoritsim.
