Five people have been confirmed dead including a pregnant woman and about forty people have been hospitalized after eating waakye.

The waakye was allegedly brought at a joint at Oyibi Bush Canteen Junction located in the Greater Region.

Apart from the five dead cases recorded, about forty people including the vendor herself have been hospitalized at the Valley View Hospital and other clinics after complaining of acute stomach ache. This was reported to have happened last week Friday.

During a visit of the Daily Graphic to the hospital, it was verified by some health workers that people have been rushed to the hospital but as of now they have been medicated and discharged. The hospital officials stated that they investigating to be sure if these people suffered from food poisoning.

The hospital officials said they are still running some laboratory test. Until they are done with these tests, they can’t ascertain the cause of the stomach ache.

A bereaved wife of one the deceased mentioned that her husband by name Kennedy complained of stomach ache and diarrhoea but he died before they could reach the hospital.

The Oyibi Police verified that cases of food poisoning was reported to them but as it stands now, they can’t give more details.
