Members of Parliament for the New Democratic Congress (NDC), have called out to the National Executive Council of the Party to alter their decision to expel Haruna Iddrisu, Muntaka Mubarak, and James Klutse.
Haruna Iddrisu is the MP for Tamale South and also the minority leader of the NDC in the seventh republic of Ghana. He was assisted by Muntaka Mubarak the MP for Asawase as the Minority Chief Whip in Parliament. However, On Tuesday, January 24, 2023, the NEC of the Party which is led by Asiedu Nketiah announced that Dr. Casseil Ato Forson, Kwame Abgodza and Emmanuel Armah Kofi- Buah have been selected to replace the caucus of Haruna Iddrisu. Some MPs of the NDC party have announced their displeasure with this decision by the NEC and have demanded that the current leadership of the minority caucus should be maintained.
Ibrahim Murtala Muhammad, the Member of Parliament for the Tamale Central Constituency has openly declared his opposition to this decision.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM monitored by 1Family Radio, the lawmaker stated that they are satisfied with the performance of the minority leadership and demanded that they should be reconstituted immediately. He declared that he does not know the basis for this decision and the timing is not even right. He furthered that the skillful ones are being removed whiles the inexperienced leaders are being elected.
A Ghanaian lawyer and the Member of Parliament for the Zebilla East Constituency, Cletus Avoka has also spoken against this decision. He demanded that the NEC of the party should explain the rationale behind their decision. He stated that the main objective of the party should be on how to win the 2024 elections against the New Patriotic Party. he lamented that this could be a major problem for the party in their quest to win back power in the upcoming presidential elections. “This is not tactical and didn’t have to come out like this” he noted.
The Chairman for the Tamale South Constituency of the NDC, Abdul Rauf has also opposed this decision and has requested that Haruna Iddrisu should be reconstituted. “We would not accept this decision” he retorted. He believes Asiedu Nketiah is accountable for this decision.
Abdul Rauf uttered that they elected Nketiah as the General Secretary of the party when he was not even prominent. He cautioned Nketiah that he shouldn’t use his position as the National Chairman to punish people.
